Action: the release of seals into the Baltic Sea

On 28 May three young gray seals named Nord, Natka and Neptunwere released into the Baltic Sea at the beach in Czołpino in the Słowinski National Park. The releasing seals action has already been held for the 16th time and it is a joint action of the Marine Station, WWF Poland and the SNP. Three individuals who were released to their natural habitat were born this year in the IO UG Marine Station in Hel. This is where they were taught self-reliance for the first several weeks. The place of seals release in Czołpino in the National Park is not accidental. Marine mammals are safe here. They are not exposed to noise, nor are they endangered by being tangled in fishing nets and other hazards. However, outside the Park, lots of dangers are waiting for them.

In order to monitor migrations and behavior of juveniles, they have been equipped with transmitters stuck on their backs to their coat. During molting time, which will take place in May next year, the transmitters will fall off. With mounted devices we can know their migration route, the pace of movement, time and depth of the dive. On the basis of the collected information, it will be possible to know the habits of gray seals and their more effective protection. Seal migration route can be tracked on the website: http://wedrowkifok.wwf.pl/.
