The area of sea waters situated within the Słowiński National Park is a potentially good habitat for marine mammals, however, despite this fact, the presence of seals is rarely observed and the presence of harbor porpoise has not yet been reported.
The project entitled ?The Protection of grey seal (Halichoerus grypus) and harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) habitats in the Słowiński National Park? implemented by Słowiński National Park aims to improve the efficiency of management and monitoring of the area by identifying potential habitats of the Baltic mammals.
The equipment enabling the detection of the presence of porpoises will be deployed in the maritime area of ??Słowiński National Park as a part of the project. Furthermore, the increase of patrols shall follow, both from the shore and from a boat which will enable the increase of the possibility of monitoring of sea waters within the area of Słowiński National Park area.
During periodic cruises, in addition to the monitoring, the search and removal of lost fishing nets that pose potential threat to marine animals will be performed.
The project will be implemented in the years 2014- 2016 with eligible cost of 1 797 250 PLN, of which 85% will constitute a grant from the 2009- 2014 Norwegian Financial Mechanism of the European Economic Area.
